LSI Logic and Intel collaborate to extend MegaRAID Solutions To PCI Express technology
MegaRAID solution offers adopters of PCI Express architecture a viable and proven RAID technology using industry-standard storage components and software
LAS VEGAS, NV - June 10, 2003 - LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI) today announced joint validation and development efforts to deliver MegaRAID® solutions using Intel's forthcoming high-performance I/O processor for PCI Express™, code named Dobson. Initial solutions will utilize LSI Logic MegaRAID RAID software; LSI Logic Ultra320 SCSI controllers; and Intel's I/O processors with Intel® XScale™ technology. Future product solutions will incorporate serial attached SCSI (SAS) storage interfaces.
"Direct-attach ROMB solutions are rapidly-growing elements of the server storage market, delivering excellent data availability and I/O performance into highly-integrated server form factors. We are seeing strong demand for more efficient and cost-effective solutions that scale to higher storage bandwidths, reduce I/O overhead and latencies, and offer architectural flexibility to support future storage interfaces," said Phil Bullinger, vice president and general manager of LSI Logic's RAID storage adapters division. "As users look to implement PCI Express solutions, they can be assured that LSI Logic's MegaRAID software and storage controllers, combined with the performance of Intel's PCI Express I/O processor, will deliver industry-leading solutions that meet our customers' performance expectations and aggressive time-to-market requirements."
"Our close work with LSI Logic in their development of RAID and ROMB solutions is a key element in the delivery of fully integrated PCI Express server platforms in 2004," said Mike Wall, general manager of Intel's Storage Components Division. "LSI Logic's commitment to deliver ROMB for PCI Express will enable server OEMs to integrate RAID directly onto server platforms while taking full advantage of the high bandwidth and modularity of PCI Express."
The high-speed serial I/O architecture of PCI Express addresses the growing performance, scalability, feature extensibility and mission critical reliability demands that are inherent in the server market. It gives system designers the flexibility to develop new, more modular solutions that will scale to support the higher bandwidths demanded by the world's leading server builders.
LSI Logic is the leading third-party supplier of host-based RAID to the global PC and server markets with more than two million RAID solutions shipped to OEMs, ODMs, system integrators and resellers worldwide. Powered by a proven firmware engine and common interface across its product lines, LSI Logic services customers with a complete spectrum of PCI-RAID solutions ranging from: highly integrated RAID on motherboard (ROMB) and RAID on Chip (ROC) technologies to high-performance host-based SCSI, Serial ATA and ATA RAID adapters.
