MIPS Technologies Licenses MIPS32(R) 24KEc(TM) Processor Core to Fangtek Ltd. for Mobile Phone Applications
Latest China Licensee Achieves Lower Power Consumption, Higher Performance, Lower Cost Using MIPS(R) Core in New Media Processors
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- April 5, 2006-- MIPS Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer and business applications, today announced that Fangtek Ltd., a leading provider of IC solutions for mobile devices with offices in the U.S. and China, has licensed the MIPS32® 24KEc(TM) core to develop high-performance, cost-effective cell phone media processors.
The 24KEc core integrates the MIPS® DSP Application-Specific Extension (ASE). These instructions provide up to 3x the signal processing performance over a range of embedded applications when compared to RISC implementations without the DSP ASE. With its efficient DSP functionality and host frequency of up to 400 MHz (in a 130 nm G process), the 24KE(TM) family significantly reduces overall SoC die area, cost, and power consumption.
Fangtek provides audio ICs for cell phone manufacturers, and is one of the first companies to support 3D surround sound, MIDI, MP3 and other audio formats with a very small footprint and low power consumption.
When asked why Fangtek chose the 24KEc core over alternative IP solutions, CEO Fang Shen said, "We evaluated several CPU core providers, and the MIPS core offered better performance and lower power consumption at a lower overall cost. In our multimedia co-processor SoC design, power consumption was critical, and it was 20 percent less using the MIPS core, compared to the popular alternatives. Die size was also smaller. In addition, with MIPS efficient DSP capability and high-performance architecture, we can design media processors to meet the challenges for voice, video, and audio processing."
"The demand by wireless carriers for cost-optimized multimedia mobile devices continues to grow, and Fangtek's MIPS-Based media processors will give manufacturers a compelling alternative to current offerings," said Brad Holtzinger, vice president of worldwide sales for MIPS Technologies. "We welcome Fangtek as our first 24KEc China licensee and look forward to seeing MIPS-Based mobile devices in the hands of consumers throughout China and the rest of the world."
