Xilinx Delivers Millionth Virtex-II FPGA Into Customer Hands, Garnering Over 80% Market Segment Share*
World's most popular FPGA series delivers lowest system cost with Virtex-II Pro FPGAs and guaranteed 25% no-risk cost reduction path with Virtex-II Series EasyPath solutions
SAN JOSE, Calif., June 23, 2003 - Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ:XLNX), the world's leading programmable logic supplier, today announced it has delivered over one million Virtex-II FPGAs. Xilinx is the number one PLD provider in the world, and ranks as the fourth largest ASIC provider in the world, according to Dataquest. Xilinx is larger than all of its PLD competitors combined and offers the industry's broadest product offering.
Xilinx attributes much of its recent growth to the success of its Virtex-II line of FPGAs, and the traction the family has made since its introduction in 2001. The Virtex Series is the world's most popular high performance FPGA with over 80 percent of the business for FPGAs at 1.5V and below*. This market segment share is more than four times higher than the next closest competitor.
Today, Virtex-II and Virtex-II Pro Platform FPGAs have been broadly adopted in sophisticated, high-performance applications historically dominated by application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). Xilinx customers worldwide are taking full advantage of the unique combination of price, performance, density, and flexibility of the Virtex-II series. ASIC alternatives simply cannot offer the reprogrammability of an FPGA, even after deployment to the field.
Guaranteed Cost Reduction Path
In addition to providing a flexible logic alternative, the Virtex-II Series EasyPath solution provides a seamless cost-reduction vehicle for customers designing with Virtex-II and Virtex-II Pro FPGAs, without requiring any additional customer resources. Using the Xilinx EasyPath family, designers of today's complex systems can not only continue to build in Virtex-II Series FPGAs as the critical element of their systems, but also take that flexibility into production at a guaranteed 25% cost reduction path and up to 80% savings.
"In today's uncertain economy, customer demand for programmable logic continues to grow. Xilinx FPGAs provide a cost-effective, flexible alternative without the long term commitment or high NRE costs associated with traditional ASICs," said Erich Goetting, vice president and general manager of the Advanced Products Division at Xilinx.
"We knew the cycle time for ASIC development would be too long and cost prohibitive. The reprogrammable nature of Xilinx Virtex-II FPGAs is part of our overall supply chain strategy to minimize development and tooling costs, unit system cost, in-field support and warranty/repair costs," said Mike Witkowski, chief technology officer at MaXXan Systems.
The Xilinx Virtex-II Platform FPGA series delivers the highest performance and highest density of any programmable logic solution available today. The innovative Virtex-II IP Immersion architecture enables integration of both hard and soft intellectual property (IP), enhanced system memory, and lightning-fast DSP performance, providing the best platform for advanced digital designs in the industry. With densities ranging from 40,000 to eight million-system gates, Virtex-II solutions are empowered by advanced design tools that reduce development time through fast design entry, powerful synthesis, smart implementation algorithms, and efficient verification capabilities.
