Synopsys Announces Industry's First Wireless USB Device Controller IP Based on the Certified Wireless USB Specification
Early IP Availability From Synopsys Drives Wireless USB Integration Into Next Generation SoCs
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- Sept. 26, 2005 -- Synopsys, Inc. (Nasdaq: SNPS), a world leader in semiconductor design software, today announced its IP solution based on the Certified Wireless USB specification from the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) for system-on-chip (SoC) integration. Certified Wireless USB gives portable devices the ability to connect without the need for cables. The full-featured, synthesizable DesignWare(R) Cores Wireless USB (WiUSB) device controller is designed to the WiMedia(TM) Alliance Ultra-wideband Common Radio Platform standard. A demonstration of the Synopsys WiUSB Device will be running in both the Synopsys and Intel booths at the Wireless USB Developers Conference in Tokyo Japan on September 28 and 29, 2005.
Synopsys designed its DesignWare WiUSB IP core using low-power flows and a low-power architecture to minimize area and power consumption. The DesignWare WiUSB core provides an AMBA(TM) 2 AHB(TM) interface to enable efficient system integration and is compatible with the WiMedia MAC-PHY interface for PHY interoperability. An extensive verification process, including simulation and hardware interoperability testing, enabled Synopsys to develop the high-quality IP, lowering designers' overall integration risk and speeding time to results.
"The availability of IP based on Certified Wireless USB demonstrates the maturity of the standard and will speed WiMedia adoption at all levels of integration in portable consumer products," said Stephen Wood chair of the WiMedia Alliance. "Synopsys' DesignWare WiUSB IP completes the WiMedia Ultra-wideband solution for developers of hardware, software, IP, chips and systems."
"As a technical contributor to the Certified Wireless USB specification, Synopsys has made substantive contributions to the creation of this technology," said Jeff Ravencraft, chairman and president of the USB Implementers Forum. "We will soon see more companies like Synopsys offer building blocks that lead to great consumer products based on Certified Wireless USB."
"Next-generation products will demand high bandwidths to wirelessly deliver rich multimedia content at home, at work and at play," said Guri Stark, vice president of Marketing, Synopsys' Solutions Group. "To meet this demand, Synopsys embarked on an ambitious effort to develop the next-generation of Wireless USB intellectual property. As the market leader of USB IP, developing a wireless USB solution is a natural progression for Synopsys. Designers understand the importance of USB IP expertise as they migrate from wired to wireless USB."
Availability
The Synopsys DesignWare WiUSB device controller core is available now for early adopters and is expected to be released for general availability in early 2006. In addition to its DesignWare WiUSB IP, Synopsys provides complete USB 1.1, 2.0 and On-The-Go (OTG) solutions including digital cores, verification IP and mixed-signal PHY IP, as well as IP for integrating flash memory.
Certified Wireless USB from the USB-IF builds on the success of wired USB, bringing USB technology into the wireless future. It gives portable devices, such as PCs or consumer electronics, the ability to connect without the need for cables. This provides system-on-chip (SoC) designers with a time saving, high-speed connection that enhances productivity. Certified Wireless USB supports high-bandwidth data streams, at a fraction of the power of existing standards. Because of the low-power requirements, it is feasible to develop cost-effective CMOS implementations. Synopsys is a contributing member of the Wireless USB Promoter Group, as well as a contributing member of the WiMedia Alliance and its technical working groups. The WiMedia Alliance is an industry association that enables interoperability across multiple protocols.
About DesignWare Cores
Synopsys DesignWare Cores provide system designers with silicon-proven, digital and mixed-signal connectivity IP for some of the world's most recognized products, including communications processors, routers, switches, game consoles, digital cameras, computers and computer peripherals. Provided as synthesizable RTL source code or in GDSII format, these cores enable designers to create innovative, cost-effective SoCs and embedded systems. Synopsys provides flexible licensing options for the DesignWare Cores. Each core can be licensed individually, on a fee-per-project basis or through a Volume Purchase Agreement, which enables customers to license all the cores in one simple agreement.
