NewLogic Announces Wireless LAN Intellectual Property Cores

New IP cores pave the way for cost-effective WLAN chipsets and systems

Lustenau, Austria; February 6th, 2002 - NewLogic, a leading supplier of intellectual property (IP) cores for wireless ICs, today announced a new family of products targeted at Wireless LAN (WLAN) applications. Nicknamed "WILD" (Wireless LAN IP for LSI Designs), the products will build on the enormous global success of NewLogic's BOOST (TM) Bluetooth cores.

The WILD (TM) IP core family comprises an IEEE compliant dual band MAC core, 802.11b and 802.11a modem cores, as well the complete protocol software featuring NIC and access point functionality. The IP cores are "future proof" and prepared for optional features such as the upcoming Quality-of-Service and Security enhancements. All cores are provided in synthesizable RTL format, including comprehensive test benches and documentation.

"The MAC (including software) and the digital PHY cores have been a major focus for us. RF IC cores designed for advanced CMOS technology will follow and will build on our successful Bluetooth (BOOST) Radio experience", explained Matthias Kaestner, Vice President of Business Development at NewLogic. "NewLogic will also license complete WLAN reference IC designs to cut down the lengthy chip design process for customers. Each core has been optimized for easy integration, lowest possible gate count and low power consumption", he added.

"NewLogic has established itself as one of the world's leading providers of intellectual property and design services for secure and wireless communication technology", said Hans-Peter Metzler, President and CEO. "We continue to expand our operations in both France and Austria while attracting top talents from around the world. New purpose built labs in Lustenau and in France have been recently commissioned to keep up with our growth", he added.

About the IEEE 802.11 standards
Most wireless LANs shipping today are based on the international IEEE 802.11b wireless standard. LANs based on that standard have a maximum 11M-bit/sec data rate in the 2.4-GHz radio band. The new IEEE 802.11a standard offers five times the speed while operating in the nearly empty 5GHz band.
