eSOL to Provide Environment-Enabling, Scalable Real-Time OS “eMCOS®” to Run on Advanced Automotive SoC’s Virtual Platform “R-Car X5H”
New Collaboration with Renesas and Synopsys Supports Cloud-Based, Hardware-free Development for the SDV Era
January 21, 2026 -- eSOL has established an environment in which its scalable real-time operating system “eMCOS” runs on the virtual platform of the automotive-focused SoC “R-Car X5H” provided by Renesas. This environment was realized through a joint technical collaboration of eSOL, Renesas, and Synopsys, and it will provide customers with a development environment that enables software-first development in the era of Software Defined Vehicles (SDV).
With the arrival of the SDV era, the need for flexible, scalable, and safe software platforms in automotive software development is higher than ever. To address this, OEMs are developing their own OS platforms. However, beyond that, there is a growing need for solutions that enable real-time, efficient testing, validation, and integration of applications with mixed levels of criticality, which is essential for accelerating development of increasingly large and complex systems.
In the newly established development environment, Synopsys’ advanced virtualization technology in its virtual execution environment “Virtualizer Native Execution (VNE)” enables development using the advanced features of eMCOS and R-Car X5H before hardware even becomes available. By providing this solution, jointly developed by the three companies, eSOL is meeting the demand for an early initiation of automotive software development.

- Scalable Real-Time OS “eMCOS”:
eMCOS is based on an advanced multikernel architecture and it supports scalability from microcontrollers and single-core processors to multi/many-core processors and multi-chip systems, achieving both high performance and high safety. It has been certified under the ISO 26262 ASIL D functional safety standard and strongly supports system development in mission-critical fields such as automotive systems.

- Virtual Execution Environment “Virtualizer Native Execution”:
Synopsys’ Virtualizer Native Execution is an extension of its virtual prototyping tool “Virtualizer.” It provides cloud-based digital twins that mirror the performance of physical hardware while enabling real-time execution of unmodified production binary software. This allows comprehensive testing, integration, and validation without relying on physical prototypes.

“eMCOS is an ideal real-time OS platform that combines real-time capability and scalability in multi/many-core environments, addressing the complexity of automotive systems” said Tomoyuki Uda, Vice President CBO, General Manager of Business Management. “With eMCOS now running on the R-Car X5H virtual platform via VNE, we can offer a new approach to early development without relying on physical hardware. eSOL will continue to collaborate with cutting-edge technologies in the industry to contribute to improving software quality, safety, and development efficiency.
“This collaboration is truly groundbreaking. It integrates eSOL’s advanced software, Renesas’ state-of-the-art hardware, and Synopsys’ powerful virtualization and testing solutions into one seamless environment” said Mr. Sylvain Bayon De Noyer, Senior Director of Synopsys, Inc. “We go beyond providing technology, working closely with OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers through practical support and innovation to help them lead the evolution of SDV development. Our commitment as a partner is one of the key aspects of this collaboration.
“R-Car X5H is the industry’s first multi-domain SoC built with 3-nm process technology, enabling the integration of multiple automotive domains such as ADAS, IVI, and gateways on a single platform. Through collaboration with eSOL and Synopsys, Renesas’ R-Car Open Access Platform enables faster and more flexible software development,” concluded Mr. Mitsuhiro Tomita, Sr Manager of Renesas Electronics Corporation.
