4i2i Reaches 100th IP Deal
One of 4i2i’s recent headline grabbing announcements was in November with the world’s leading programmable logic supplier, Xilinx. This marked the launch of the industry’s first High Definition H.264 video encoder in a single FPGA.
4i2i has an enviable track record of technical and commercial success. The company was established in 1995 by the husband and wife partnership of Martyn and Laura Riley.
With a focus on supplying leading edge products to customers globally, 4i2i was profitable within its first year. The strong focus on cost and value has provided 4i2i with financial stability which is carefully managed as the business goes from strength to strength.
As well as completing its 100th deal, 4i2i opened a new office in Edinburgh during October. It is currently recruiting more engineers to join the 18-strong work force and is also expanding its office base in San Jose, US, to include a state of the art product demonstration facility.
The company has kept a relatively low profile for the last 10 years but recently appointed Colin Turnbull to the newly created post of vice president marketing. Turnbull joined from Axeon.
He said: “Joining 4i2i is very exciting. We are in a positive position – few IP firms manage to successfully complete 100 IP deals and not many private companies have our track record of profitability. We’ve always controlled costs and spotted trends in the technology market to ensure we’re focusing on the right sector. We are able to respond to change positively and effectively.
“We’ve a very flat structure, with our engineers dealing directly with our customers’ engineers. This means the message doesn’t get changed or diluted and the communication is seamless. Internally the business is transparent and the engineers – many of whom are educated to PhD level – are highly motivated.
“We’ve received positive and useful support from Scottish Enterprise over the years.”
Turnbull is confident this growth can continue pointing out that 4i2i’s customers tend to be large household names involved in a fast moving video market.
