Renesas Mobile to Demonstrate the Industry's First POWERVR SGX MP Enabled Mobile Application Processor at Mobile World Congress 2011
TOKYO, Japan, February 10, 2011 — Renesas Mobile Corporation, an innovative supplier of advanced cellular semiconductor solutions and platforms, today announced that it will exhibit the industry's first mobile application processor system-on-chip (SoC), the SH-Mobile APE5R, featuring Imagination Technologies' POWERVR SGX MP™ (multi-processor) graphics at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2011. Blazingly fast, the SH-Mobile APE5R delivers more than five times the graphics performance of current generation devices, together with multi-core computing and high-end multimedia for advanced smartphones and mobile internet devices (MIDs).
Renesas Mobile will show the stunning graphics capabilities of the POWERVR SGX MP used in the SH-Mobile APE5R application platform at MWC 2011 from February 14-17, 2011 at the booth of its partner, Imagination Technologies, a leading multimedia chip technology company (Hall 1, 1D45).
Renesas Mobile has debuted a new mobile application processor, the SH-Mobile APE5R, setting a new landmark for the wireless industry by combining a high-performance, low-power, dual-core implementation of the ARM® Cortex™-A9 MPCore™ running at 1.2 gigahertz (GHz), with the industry's first implementation of Imagination Technologies' multi-core POWERVR Series 5XT MP graphics technology. In addition to the advanced computing performance, the SH-Mobile APE5R delivers impressive levels of mobile and embedded graphics performance, over five times that of current generation devices. Achieving a new level of graphics compute density with significantly enhanced performance per square millimetre (mm2) and per milliwatt (mW), this marks a breakthrough in mobile computing, removing the last performance barriers for smartphone and MID manufacturers to develop future-proof devices with console-class gaming capabilities and stunning user interfaces.
The SH-Mobile APE5R combines the ultimate performance of the multi-core computing ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore and multi-core graphics of the POWERVR SGX MP with rich multimedia features of the market-leading Renesas Mobile application processor series, renowned in the wireless industry. A programmable yet ultimate low power video processing sub-system enabling today's most advanced mobile video experiences through H.264 High Definition (1080p/60fps) video format support (encode and decode) and HD 1080p stereoscopic 3D (S3D) video and a dedicated audio subsystem for extended music playback. This is all combined with an innovative low power management methodology based on Renesas Mobile's vast design experience of highly integrated SoCs and multi-core systems. The SH-Mobile APE5R sets the industry benchmark for mobile application processor platforms offering the ultimate computing and graphics performance, yet pursuing the low power requirements needed in smartphone and MIDs.
“Leading manufacturers are demanding high performance POWERVR graphics to deliver console-class mobile gaming, innovative personal navigation and engaging user interfaces as well as GP-GPU based image processing using OpenCL”, said Tony King-Smith, VP marketing, Imagination Technologies. “These applications are driving the compute density required of GPUs in mobile and embedded products on an unstoppable upward path. Consumers using these applications are driving the smartphone and tablet business, and they are actively choosing products that deliver the very best performance – they will not settle for ‘just good enough’ graphics. Renesas Mobile's new SH-Mobile APE5R has the capabilities to enable mobile and embedded graphics-rich devices to deliver the next level of graphics-rich user experiences, and we're delighted that this latest device demonstrates the value of the long term partnership we have with Renesas Mobile.”
“High-speed computing has become mainstream in smartphones today,” said Toshihiro Hattori, Vice President, SoC Business Unit, Renesas Mobile Corporation. “However, we see a strong demand for ever increasing graphics performance to support an exciting gaming experience and rich-user-interface applications that differentiate smartphones today and tomorrow.” “The early adoption of Imagination Technologies' POWERVR SGX MP technology with its best-in-class graphics performance into Renesas Mobile's SH-Mobile APE5R market leading mobile application processors will enable our customers to develop differentiating and attractive products to meet the new consumer expectations.”
