Philips Licenses MIPS TechnologiesMIPS32 4KEc Core
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA, July 25, 2005 - MIPS Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer and business applications, announced today that long-time licensee Philips Semiconductors International BV has licensed the MIPS32® 4KEc® core. The high performance, low power 4KEc core will be used to develop SoCs for advanced set-top boxes and PC TV cards.
The synthesizable 4KEc core, a member of the MIPS32 4KE™ family, gives licensees the flexibility to optimize applications for performance, size or power consumption, thereby reducing overall system costs. The 4KE core family delivers 1.5 DMIPS/MHz performance in an area as small as 1.0 mm2 in a 0.13-micron process. In addition, the 4KEc core offers the broadest industry support of operating systems, middleware, algorithms and tools for embedded applications including digital set-top boxes, a market in which the MIPS architecture is the de facto standard.
As one of MIPS Technologies' long-term Instruction Set Architecture licensees, Philips has previously developed its own MIPS-Based™ processors but chose the 4KEc core because it meets the company's design requirements while speeding time-to-market, lowering cost, and providing a synthesizable product that can be targeted to multiple processes.
"By using a 4KEc MIPS core, we are confident of delivering a superior, high-performance solution," said Dr. Marc Corthout, General Manager of the ReUse Technology Group at Philips Semiconductors. "The 4KEc core powers sophisticated, next-generation products at a lower cost."
"Philips has a long history with MIPS Technologies, and an impressive portfolio of innovative MIPS-Based products. We are delighted they have chosen to extend their commitment to include the 4KEc core and further reinforce the MIPS architecture as the standard in digital video devices," said Jack Browne, vice president of worldwide sales at MIPS Technologies, Inc.
