Phatnoise develops in-car MP3 digital media player using Xilinx low-power CPLDs

Xilinx-enabled PhatBox stores thousands of digital media files providing users with hundreds of hours of digital audio playback

SAN JOSE, Calif., November 12, 2002 - Xilinx, Inc., (NASDAQ:XLNX) today announced that PhatNoise, Inc., a leading provider of digital audio entertainment systems located in Los Angeles, Calif., has designed Xilinx® CoolRunner® series CPLDs (complex programmable logic devices) into the PhatBox™ Car Audio System. The new system provides an entirely new in-car entertainment experience by seamlessly integrating new media technology with current car stereos. PhatNoise selected Xilinx CoolRunner CPLDs based on their high performance, ultra low power, and design flexibility features. PhatNoise is among a growing number of companies using Xilinx low-cost, flexible silicon as a competitive advantage in automotive telematics applications.

"Xilinx's ultra-low-power CoolRunner CPLDs provided us with the design flexibility we needed to get to market ahead of the competition," said Dannie Lau, founder and executive vice president of Business and Product Development at PhatNoise. "The cost-optimized silicon, free design tools, and simple implementation provided us with a total solution for our design requirements."

"We designed CoolRunner-II CPLDs to address the increasing demands of today's consumer market," said Sandeep Vij, vice president of Worldwide Marketing at Xilinx. "Innovative companies such as PhatNoise are realizing the benefits of using programmable logic to enable the next wave of automotive infotainment systems."

Xilinx CoolRunner-II CPLDs offer high performance, ultra-low power consumption, and the highest I/O count per macrocell, and are cost optimized to address the increasing demands of today's system designer. Information on Xilinx CPLDs is available at www.xilinx.com/cr2. The Xilinx IQ Solutions product line, announced earlier this year, is designed specifically for architecting automotive intelligence and infotainment products into the cabin of the automobile at extended operating temperatures and is now available for the CoolRunner line of CPLDs.

The PhatBox Digital Media Player is compatible with certain car stereos that have the ability to control an external CD changer. The PhatNoise Music Manager PC software dynamically organizes digital music collections into custom playlists and converts existing CDs into digital music files using MP3, Windows Media Audio files (WMA) and other popular formats. Taking the collection on the road is as simple as synchronizing the PC with a 20GB, removable, digital media storage (DMS) cartridge using a USB docking station. The palm-sized DMS cartridge is capable of holding up to 6,000 music tracks or approximately 500 CDs in MP3 format and even greater capacity in WMA format.
