Motorola announces i.MX21 Applications Processor Incorporating Hantro Video Technology
– Hantro’s 4350 hardware video codec enables simultaneous encode and decode CIF resolution video at up to 30 frames per second on Motorola’s i.MX21 applications processor.
The Hantro 4350 MPEG-4/H.263 hardware codec provides up to CIF (352 x 288 pixels) resolution video compression/de-compression capability to wireless video-enabled devices, such as mobile phones, PDAs, and digital still cameras. Delivered as intellectual property to be integrated on ARM® AMBA bus based System-on-Chip designs, Hantro’s 4350 CIF codec is specifically tailored for low-power devices.
With the codec integrated on the i.MX21 the implementation of high-quality video applications like multimedia messaging, video streaming and video telephony is made easy. In addition, Hantro can offer ready made multimedia applications that run on the i.MX platform. This way device manufacturers using the i.MX1, the i.MXL and i.MX21 can offer their customers advanced multimedia applications without wasting valuable time and resource on software development.
Our strategy to develop both hardware and software video codecs and multimedia applications is further proven in the i.MX series from Motorola” says Eero Kaikkonen, CEO of Hantro “with our software codec already ported to the i.MX1 and now our hardware CIF codec integrated in the i.MX21 Motorola is able to offer their customers the best value / performance proposition for video capability.”
“Hantro is notable in that they have approached MPEG-4 codec development from a mobile background” says Omid Tahernia, vice president and director, Wireless and Mobile Systems Group, Motorola Semiconductor Products Sector. “The company’s long history in developing for mobile devices places them in a very unique position when looking for solutions to the problems presented by video enabling mobile devices.”
