MIPS Technologies Demonstrates Microsoft's Windows CE Operating System On New 24K High-Performance Core Family
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 12, 2004 -
MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS) today announced that the highest performing line of synthesizable 32-bit microprocessors - the MIPS32® 24K™ core family - was demonstrated using Microsoft's Windows CE 5.0 operating system at this year's MIPS/Microsoft Executive Summit. Customers are able to download the Malta™ board support package (BSP) for Windows CE version 4.2 and the 24K core family from MIPS Technologies' Website. BSP packages for the Windows CE 5.0 operating system and the 24K core family will be available with Microsoft's full release later this year.
The invitation-only MIPS/Microsoft Executive Summit is held annually at Microsoft Corp.'s campus in Redmond for executives at semiconductor and system integrator companies developing MIPS-Based™ SOCs and software applications, and gives participants an exclusive preview of upcoming embedded development platforms from Microsoft that are optimized for the industry-standard MIPS® architecture. The annual Executive Summit also serves as a forum to provide feedback to the MIPS/Microsoft joint development team on the requirements for next-generation applications in targeted end markets, such as for optimized codecs like Windows Media for audio, broadband SOHO wireless access points, set-top boxes, digital televisions and automotive infotainment devices. This year's event was attended by close to fifty representatives from MIPS Technologies customers and partners, and featured executives from Microsoft's Broadband Networking, eHome, Mobile and Embedded Devices Group, Windows Digital Media and Windows Automotive business units.
At the Summit, attendees were shown a demonstration of MIPS Technologies' newest high performance 32-bit product line, with a 24Kc™ core running the next version of the Windows CE 5.0. The demonstration featured real-time streaming video and live Internet surfing. The 24K core family is supported by version 4.2 of the Windows CE operating system and will have ongoing support for future Windows CE releases.
"As the MIPS architecture continues to grow as a leading choice for consumer electronics and networking device applications, we are actively engaged with a number of MIPS licensees and broadening our support of the MIPS architecture across a spectrum of device categories," said Todd Brix, group product manager for the Mobile and Embedded Devices Division at Microsoft. "The recently introduced MIPS-Based Windows Media Extender is one example of how we are working with MIPS Technologies to speed development time for device-makers building products such as wireless projectors, IP set-top boxes, voice over IP phones, and network and storage gateways."
"Feature-rich consumer applications, such as digital televisions, residential gateways, automotive infotainment devices and set-top boxes, are putting increasing demands on SOC developers," said Jeff Sasagawa, director of system solutions at MIPS Technologies. "By leveraging industry-standard commercial technologies, such as the MIPS architecture and the Windows CE operating system, engineers can get to market quickly and reduce overall development costs by concentrating on their application expertise. Time to market is accelerated by the rich suite of integrated functionality that is included in Windows CE, while the modularity allows the subsetting necessary to hit critical cost points. We look forward to continuing our decade-long relationship with Microsoft and to continuing to offer customers an optimized, out-of-the-box embedded platform."
About the MIPS32 24K Core Family
The MIPS32 24K core family, which includes the 24Kc™, 24Kc Pro, 24Kf™ and 24Kf Pro versions, offers performance from 400 to 550 MHz worst case in a 0.13 micron process, the highest frequency available in 32-bit synthesizable cores for embedded markets, while minimizing design time and reducing product costs. Tailored SOC design methodologies, an Open Core Protocol (OCP) interconnect structure, standard libraries and on-chip memories from industry-leading companies help speed time-to-market, an important advantage for a processor core suited to embedded consumer applications such as digital and interactive TVs, set-top boxes and DVD players.
