MIPS Architecture Extends into Automotive Telematics Sector With Strategic Partnership Between DENSO and Toshiba

Toshiba’s TX49 Leverages the High Performance MIPS Architecture To Become the Platform of Choice for Car Navigation Designs

MOUNTAIN VIEW, December 10, 2003 -

MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer and business applications, today announced that long-time partner Toshiba has formed a strategic alliance with DENSO Corporation of Japan to develop next-generation car navigational devices for the burgeoning automotive market. Demonstration boards displaying Denso's car navigation system using Toshiba's MIPS-Based™ TX49 processor will be shown tomorrow at the TRON Show 2004 in Tokyo.

Designers of automotive applications, such as navigation and infotainment products, are driven by the often conflicting demands of offering a rich car user experience while keeping costs down and getting to market quickly. MIPS-Based 32- and 64-bit processors offer designers access to a wide range of optimized software and IP that only are available on an industry-standard architecture while delivering the highest performance available in a licensable technology.

"This key design win by Toshiba extends their market leadership in the fast-growing automotive telematics market," said Jack Browne, vice president of worldwide sales at MIPS Technologies. "Toshiba continues to leverage its ongoing investment in the MIPS architecture to offer its customers dynamic application performance that meets the needs of a broad range of consumer applications, such as car devices. We applaud this latest success and look forward to continuing our long-standing relationship."

The strategic partnership between Toshiba and Denso includes co-development and implementation of a multi-operating system (OS) platform that forms the basis for advanced system-on-chip (SoC) designs by enabling uITRON (the predominant embedded operating system for deeply embedded devices targeted for the Japanese market) and Windows® Automotive in a single OS environment. This multi-OS environment will utilize the high-performance MIPS architecture to enable user applications, such as Internet and network connectivity and the display of audio and video content.
