Lucent Technologies, Wind River, Trillium Digital Systems leverage expertise to reduce time-to-market for Internet phones by as much as six months

ALLENTOWN, Pa./ALAMEDA, Calif./LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) Microelectronics Group, Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: WIND), and Trillium Digital Systems, Inc. today announced that they are jointly creating an integrated hardware/software development kit based on Lucent's system-on-a-chip (SoC) for Internet telephones that can reduce product development time by as much as six months. This collaboration provides the world's most complete integrated Internet telephone solution, giving equipment developers everything they need to quickly and easily build a voice over Internet Protocol (IP) phone. Lucent Technologies Microelectronics Group is the world's leader in communications semiconductors. Wind River Systems is the leader in embedded development software and services for the post-PC era. Trillium Digital Systems is the leading provider of communications software solutions.
"Typically, Internet telephone manufacturers would have to purchase and integrate these Wind River and Trillium software technologies with Lucent's Internet telephone system on a chip hardware technology on their own," said IdaRose Sylvester, an analyst with Dataquest. "Now that's no longer necessary. They can go to one chip set manufacturer for the entire package, thereby saving months in their product deliveries and giving them the freedom to focus on their own value-added software development, which results in differentiating features for their Internet telephones. Lucent got out in front earlier this year with the introduction of the world's first complete Internet telephone on a chip technology, and they are competitively positioned by blending the software with the hardware package for convenience and acceleration of time-to-market for their customers."
The reference design and development kit is based on Lucent's SoC solution for Internet telephones. Lucent announced the capability to introduce a single-chip solution for Internet telephones in May of this year, and will initially offer a two-chip solution. Wind River's industry-standard VxWorks® real time operating system (RTOS) will run on Lucent's hardware solution and a target license for the software will be included with the Lucent semiconductor offering. The integrated bundle of hardware and software also features H.323 IP telephony software technology from Trillium. Because of the close relationship, Lucent will be able to provide customers an integrated one-stop shop solution and can act as a single point of contact for target licensing. In addition, the kit contains an integrated reference design with Wind River and Trillium software package an application demonstration software provided by Lucent Technologies.
Voice-over-IP
Internet telephones converge voice and data on one Ethernet line, thereby providing voice-over-Internet Protocol technology. They also use a single wall outlet jack, which reduces the need for separate telephone and data cables. Today's business offices typically require two connections, one carrying voice and the other data, on two wall jacks. Initially, Internet telephone systems are expected to be used by medium- and small-size businesses, including the small office/home office market. Early users are likely to include end-customers interested in setting up cost-effective new office systems that integrate voice and data on a single network.
The technology for building these phones, however, still involves many disparate parts. Lucent's development kit bundles and pre-integrates a comprehensive set of leading technologies together so that developers, both new and experienced, can quickly deliver Internet phones with the vast majority of their time spent on creating differentiating features for their products.
Lucent's System-on-a-Chip
Lucent's SoC technology uses the company's own digital signal processor (DSP) and an embedded ARM 940T RISC chip. The DSP1627 handles acoustic echo-cancellation and voice-compression functions, and complies with the G.711, G.723.1, and G.729A voice-over-IP standards. The ARM 940T executes call set-up and signaling, supports the H.323 standard for encoding voice into IP packets, and integrates a media-access controller, transceiver, and repeater chip, enabling a connection over a network.
Wind River's Embedded Development Technology
Wind River's VxWorks RTOS is the de facto standard for running real-time embedded applications and devices, including next-generation Internet appliances such as voice over IP phones. Known for its reliability across a variety of environments, the VxWorks operating system is a high performance, scalable, commercial run-time system that supports more than 20 microprocessor families. Wind River's Tornado[tm] platform is the award-winning cross development environment with productivity-enhancing tools for building today's embedded applications throughout the Internet and Internet infrastructure, including switches, routers, VPN servers, cable modems and a host of other devices.
Trillium's H.323 Control Protocol Stack
Trillium's H.323 software solutions, with the industry's highest performance and smallest code size, enables communications equipment manufacturers to rapidly implement Internet phones and a broad range of other products, from small gateways to high-end carrier class switches and gatekeepers. H.323 is an industry standard that provides the basis for establishing IP voice and multimedia communications over packet-based networks, in particular for transporting voice traffic over the Internet. H.323 supports mixed audio, data and video communications, enabling communications equipment suppliers to deliver products that meet the requirements of next-generation telephony over IP networks.
Availability
Initial customers will receive Lucent's two-chip solution in December. General availability of reference design and development kits will be available in next year's first quarter. Volume production is available early in next year's second quarter. Lucent's complete package offering, including its chips and the Wind River and Trillium software, is approximately $26 in quantities of 100,000.
Trillium's H.323 technology and Wind River's VxWorks RTOS and networking software are available immediately. In addition, Wind River's Tornado application development platform with built-in simulator is also available so that developers can begin prototyping their Internet phone solution right away.
