Hardware: Golden Age or Golden Ager?

A Googler declares: "It's Golden age for hardware guys." I say, "Really?" We all sense radical changes afoot. I asked young engineers/researchers what they see as bottlenecks to innovation.
SAN FRANCISCO — If your industry boasts a history as long as 60 years, you might face the public perception that you occupy a “maturing sector” of the high-tech world. This description applies to the semiconductor industry.
But hold the obituary. More and more, the word around the valley is that hardware is somehow sneaking back into vogue.
Speaking at the Young Under 40 Innovators Award Panel at the Design Automation Conference (DAC) last week, Sheng Li, a platform architect at Google, told the DAC audience: “I think this is the golden age for hardware guys.”
