Jointwave Announces Green H.264 HD Encoder IP
From 100mW to 5mW, a green wave coming down to the mobile silicon
October 26,2009 -- Thomas Wang, President of Jointwave, and Violiu, Global Chief Marketing Executive, brought to the SSIP 2009 their new E2, E3, and E3 series of H.264 HD Video Encoder ASIC IP, which targets super low power consumption products for mobile and embedded applications. According to the present market situation, several famous suppliers of video IP for mobile applications have taken the market, among which one company founded in the 1990s has attracted the attention of one of the most famous internet equipment vendor and has entered the agreement for acquisition, thanks to their low computing and low power consumption technology in video compression. When their 720P H.264 Encoder ASIC IP works at 180 MHZ, it can provide real time video compression for 1280x720P@30fps, with power consumption of about 100mW on 90nm process and 50mW on 65 nm. Obviously, these figures have set a very competitive and world leading benchmark for power consumption of video encoders, which is well recognized by the top semiconductor companies.
Entering into the new Full HD era where its application has become ubiquitous, various demands of video applications from end-users have upgraded from SD to HD, and thus it introduces an immense change in power consumption. For those SoC vendors for handheld devices or video compression I/O & wireless transmission ASIC devices, this change will be a great challenge as well asa great opportunity. Most probably they would have to face the upcoming green energy saving competition or revolution of silicon.
Jointwave E220/E320 Model H.264 Encoder ASIC IP only uses 260K logic gates working at 50MHZ to realize a real time video compression of 1280x720P@30fps. Fabricated on the latest 40nm process and with its special ultra-low voltage technology, its power consumption can be as lower as 5 mW. Even onthe present low cost process of 110nm and with its special ultra-low voltage technology, the power consumption of E220/320 is only about 36mW. Jointwave E440 Model 1080P H.264 Encoder ASIC IP uses 300K logic gates working at 110MHZ to realize a real time video compression of 1920x1080P@30fps. Fabricated on the 65nm process and with its special ultra-low voltage technology, its power consumption is only about 28 mW, which astonished the world famous IC Design Services, IC Design House and its competitors with great curiosity and doubts. However, whether Jointwave can win this energy saving competition of silicon remains to be a question of the market and rational choice of the end users.
About SSIP 2009(Symposium of Silicon Intellectual Property 2009)
