Vivante announces extension of GPU IP Licensing Agreement with Freescale For High Performance Multi-Core Graphics
Vivante’s multi-core GPU (GC5000-MP) and GPGPU technologies to power next generation i.MX applications processors
Sunnyvale, CA – December 1st, 2011 – Vivante Corporation, a world-wide leader in graphics and visualization technologies for handheld and consumer devices, today announced its licensing agreement with Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE: FSL) has been extended to include the next generation of high-performance, multi-core graphics GC5000-MP and GPGPU IP. This agreement is in addition to the already licensed graphics cores found in Freescale’s i.MX6 series Triple-Play Graphics product line. The upcoming technologies, built around Vivante’s ScalarMorphic(TM) massively parallel, unified shader architecture and universally scalable software stack, are planned to be integrated into the rapidly expanding line of i.MX applications processors for consumer, automotive and embedded devices.
The GC5000-MP graphics and GPGPU IP allows simultaneous, coherent and distributed application contexts that merge 3D, 2D, and GPGPU compute functions. Each core works seamlessly together with instant, on-demand, task-specific load-balancing of GPU/GPGPU resources and extreme low power management, helping reduce system power and bandwidth requirements. The blending of different application types (3D, 2D and GPGPU) enables new paradigms in user applications that will evolve as processing from many of these areas are combined.
“Vivante has been a key partner and supplier of GPU/GPGPU technologies for the expanding ecosystem of solutions supporting our i.MX applications processor platform. The extension of our collaboration with Vivante enables our customers to build an even stronger portfolio of next-generation connected devices leveraging advanced visual, graphics, GPGPU and networking capabilities,” said Bernd Lienhard, V.P. and general manager of Freescale’s Multimedia Applications Division. “This collaboration, together with the new GC5000-MP aligns different portions of the ecosystem for a comprehensive solution built around a highly compelling intuitive user experience.”
“Vivante and Freescale have enjoyed a strong relationship for the past few years. This licensing extension further solidifies our relationship with the introduction of advanced GPU and GPGPU technologies like our GC5000-MP that will bring product capabilities to new heights,” said Wei-Jin Dai, CEO of Vivante. “Our ultra-scalable technologies, power miser designs, and segment leading performance per area/Watt, combined with Freescale’s expertise in designing, optimizing and marketing top of the line applications processors, represent a new generation of multi-core, multi-task platforms targeting the complete range of end markets.”
