Radiocomp demonstrates soft-configurable radio heads for WIMAX

'Soft configuration' radio technology from Radiocomp set to speed up WiMAX deployment

September 26th, 2008 -- Radiocomp – a leading provider of next generation radio technology for WiMAX - has taken a giant leap towards full implementation of software defined radio (SDR) design principles into their family of remote radio heads for WiMAX.

In September 2008 Radiocomp successfully demonstrated that the newest Radiocomp digital IF based family of remote radio heads for 2.5 and 3.5 GHz mobile WiMAX are capable of supporting all channel bandwidths and profiles defined by the WiMAX Forum within the same radio head unit and with no changes in hardware.

This means that Radiocomp’s OEM and network operating customers will be empowered to freely configure their Radiocomp WiMAX radio heads for operation at 3.5 MHz, 5 MHz, 7 MHz, 8.75 MHz, or 10 MHz bandwidths using a set of simple software commands only.

Radiocomp’s soft configuration technology significantly reduces stock handling and supply chain overhead costs for WiMAX operators and OEM suppliers. It minimizes the number of radio head variants needed for deployment in networks employing varying bandwidth profiles. Particularly operational costs are reduced leading to a significantly more profitable business case for mobile WiMAX.

“Deployment flexibility and quick time-to-market are business critical issues for the mobile WiMAX given today’s highly competitive market for mobile broadband services. Radiocomp’s SDR-based radio head solution is certain to greatly reduce the operational costs of mobile WiMAX operators,” says Henrik Dam, CTO of Clearwire of Denmark.

“The successful demonstration of Radiocomp’s soft configuration technology proves that our system platform is one great leap ahead of more traditional designs using super-heterodyne or similar architectures – architectures that are more costly and less flexible,” says Thomas Noergaard, CEO of Radiocomp. “The fact that we are already shipping WiMAX remote radio heads with a high degree of soft configuration capability is a testimony to our company-wide determination to incorporate the state-of-the-art in SDR design principles into our products,” says Mr. Noergaard.

In 2009 Radiocomp expects to further develop its industry-leading SDR-based technology for WiMAX remote radio heads. New developments for 2009 will include soft tunable RF front-end filters, flexible broadband power amplifiers, as well as higher speed digital IF designs.
