Sarnoff To Demo MPEG-4 CIF Video Codec For Cell Phones On ARM Platform At FSA Suppliers Expo
Embedded Software Runs On ARM 926 Versatile Platform, Produces Better Video With Less Demand On Processor, Battery; QCIF Codec Also At Show
PRINCETON, NJ (September 29, 2004) -- Sarnoff Corporation (www.sarnoff.com) will demonstrate its codec for efficient, high quality MPEG-4/H.263 Common Intermediate Format (CIF) video in cell phones and other portable devices on an ARM-based platform in Booth 327 at the FSA Suppliers Expo in San Jose, CA on October 6.
Running on the ARM 926 Versatile Platform board with a MOVE processor, the CIF embedded software codec will generate 15 frame/second (fps) video suitable for cell phones, PDAs, and other handhelds with small displays. The video will be displayed on an external monitor to make it easier for attendees to judge image quality.
“This is the first public demonstration of how our CIF codec actually looks onscreen,” said Bill Mayweather, Sarnoff’s Senior Director, Multimedia IP. “FSA attendees will see how our embedded software can deliver superior video while putting less load on a processor than other solutions.”
The Sarnoff CIF codec has low clock cycle requirements, freeing up the processor for other functions. Its algorithms also deliver quality video at very low power to minimize battery drain. Few if any specialized DSP or hardware extensions are required for full functionality.
Sarnoff will also be promoting its Quarter CIF (QCIF) codec at FSA Suppliers Expo. Both codecs allow device makers to do price-performance tradeoffs, making it possible to adapt them to applications where power, cost, or video quality are the primary consideration.
Sarnoff’s CIF and QCIF codecs are ready to run on the most popular general-purpose processor and can be quickly ported to others.
Princeton, NJ-based Sarnoff Corporation has a long history of video innovations, including a broad multimedia line of IP cores. The company’s work in video has earned it nine Emmy® awards for technical achievement, two of them in the area of video quality.
