New 64-Bit RISC Microprocessor From Toshiba Consumes Only 0.6W Power At Maximum 300MHz Operating Frequency
SAN JOSE, Calif., December 11, 2002 -- Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)* today announced a new member of its TX49 family of MIPS-based reduced instruction set computer (RISC) microprocessors (MPUs). The new 64-bit MPU, designated TMPR4955BFG-300, is based on the Toshiba Corporation (Toshiba) TX49/H3 core and is fabricated with 0.13-micron complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process technology. Power consumption is only 0.6 watt (W) when operating at its maximum frequency of 300 megahertz (MHz), the lowest power consumption of any processor in this product category. Running 1.5 times faster than the previous generation 200MHz product and utilizing a 32-bit SysAD bus, it is targeted at embedded applications such as color laser printers, high-performance set top boxes and networking devices that handle large amounts of graphics data.
"Toshiba continues to migrate its standard 64-bit MIPS RISC processors to higher and higher frequencies for applications that require higher CPU performance and greater system interface flexibility," said Farhad Mafie, vice president of the ASSP Business Unit at TAEC. "By choosing the TMPR4955BFG-300 processor, system architects gain the freedom to either use off-the-shelf SysAD-compatible chipsets to save development time or develop their own specific solutions around the SysAD bus with greater customization."
According to Tetsuro Wada, platform development director of the ASSP Business Unit at TAEC, "Toshiba's 300MHz TMPR4955BFG-300 64-bit RISC processor with its built-in IEEE754-compatible floating point unit (FPU), 32 kilobytes (K-bytes) 4-way set-associative instruction and data caches and 32-bit SysAD interface bus is well positioned for embedded systems that use standard SysAD bus-compatible off-the-shelf chipsets for various system interfaces."
