NEC Electronics Europe and Segger Introduce Integrated SoC Solution for Embedded Applications

SEGGERs' ''embOS®'' Real-Time Operating System available for NEC Electronics' System-on-Chip Lite+

DÜSSELDORF, Germany, HILDEN, Germany — 27 Jan 2006 --NEC Electronics (Europe) GmbH and Segger GmbH (Germany) today announced the availability of the embOS® real-time operating system (RTOS) for NEC Electronics’ System-on-Chip Lite+, ARM7TDMI-based customizable microcontroller and system-on-chip design platform. embOS® for NEC Electronics’ ARM7TDMI-based System-on-Chip Lite+ is a real-time kernel that is well-suited for resource-constrained embedded designs.embOS®  integrated with NEC Electronics’ System-on-Chip Lite+ provides designers a very cost-effective hardware design enabling high functionality for low-to-middle volume applications in the areas of communication, measurement and industrial automation. The powerful combination of SEGGERs’ embOS® and NEC Electronics’ System-on-Chip Lite+ provides a complete and reliable solution that allows developers to be instantly productive. “Porting embOS® to NEC Electronics’ System-on-Chip Lite+ emphasises our long term partnership with NEC Electronics. It complements a wide range of supported NEC Electronics CPUs”, comments Rolf Segger, President and CEO at SEGGER.

NEC Electronics’ System-on-Chip Lite+ is a versatile customizable controller based on the well-established ARM7TDMI 32-bit CPU core for low-to-mid-volume, cost-sensitive applications. The advantage of System-on-Chip Lite+ is that it allows customers to randomly implement application-specific functionality with a pre-designed and pre-verified 60MHz ARM7TDMI-based microcontroller unit (MCU) in one single device by using easy ASIC design implementation methodology. The integration is supported by a comprehensive FPGA-based development board that allows verification of the final device’s functionality and early software development prior to manufacturing. The pre-designed and pre-verified System-on-Chip Lite+ MCU subsystem includes already such valuable function blocks like a multi-port memory controller, a 10/100M Ethernet MAC, an interrupt controller, a timer, a UART interface and a watchdog timer. Further function blocks and customer defined logic are connected with the MCU via the AMBA-compliant AHB and APB busses.

embOS®, one of the smallest and fastest kernels commercially available, provides on all CPUs the benefits of a fully featured multitasking system by 100% identical API. Its small memory footprint makes it also suitable for single-chip applications. embOS® comes with a viewer that allows looking into the system from the PC (including profiling). It supports a variety of 8 to 32 bit CPUs and is available as source or object code, royalty-free. A ready to go start project and embOSView (profiling support) is included. A TCP/IP stack is also available for embOS.

Availability

embOS® for the NEC Electronics System-on-Chip Lite+ kernel and board support package are available now via the local European Segger sales offices.
