ARM Mali GPU Makes Advanced Graphics a Reality for All Consumers

Mali-300 GPU meets demand for compelling gaming and UIs on entry-level and mid-range portable and home devices

CAMBRIDGE, UK –  NOV.22, 2010 –  ARM today announced the ARM Mali™-300 graphics processing unit (GPU), supporting OpenGL ES 2.0 and bringing High Definition (HD) graphics performance to entry-level and mid-range consumer devices. The new GPU offers a seamless upgrade path from the Mali-200 GPU to make immersive gaming and HD1080p user interfaces (UI) a reality for all consumers.

The area-optimized Mali-300 GPU delivers a performance level between the ARM Mali-200 and the scalable multi-core Mali-400 MP embedded graphics solutions.  Built around the same basic architecture as Mali-400 MP, the single core Mali-300 GPU has an 8KB L2 cache enabling HD performance at industry-leading memory bandwidth efficiency.  It provides a complete graphics acceleration platform based on the Khronos™ OpenGL ES 2.0 open standard for advanced embedded graphics, allowing for the straightforward implementation of an affordable  variety of advanced 3D content across all major mobile and embedded platforms.

“Consumers now expect engaging user experiences on all embedded devices, from entry level mobile phones through to set-top boxes and tablets,” said Lance Howarth, EVP and general manager, Media Processing Division, ARM.  “Compelling graphics are a must in all screen-based devices and the Mali-300 GPU meets the demand for high-performance embedded graphics where silicon area, system bandwidth and battery power are limited.  The Mali-300 GPU will make today’s high-end the new mainstream.”

The Mali-300 GPU offers support for the Khronos industry standards OpenVG™ 1.1, and OpenGL® ES 1.1/2.0, in common with other ARM Mali GPUs. Straightforward application portability and development, as well as the flexibility to seamlessly upgrade to the Mali-400 MP GPU for scalable performance, are enabled through a single driver and application stack for the Mali-200, Mali-300 and Mali-400 MP GPUs.  This minimizes the cost of hardware and software development and validation for SOC vendors.
