ARM Licenses Jazelle Software To SavaJe To Accelerate JAVA For Embedded And Handheld Devices

CAMBRIDGE, U.K, and CHELMSFORD, MA. - Nov. 6, 2001 - ARM [(LSE:ARM); (Nasdaq:ARMHY)], the industry's leading provider of 16/32-bit embedded RISC microprocessor solutions, and SavaJe Technologies, today announced that SavaJe has licensed ARM® Jazelle[tm] software for incorporation in the SavaJe XE operating system. SavaJe XE is a new operating system optimized to run Java[tm] applications efficiently on embedded and handheld devices.

SavaJe has licensed both the Jazelle Technology Enabling Kit (JTEK) and the VMA Technology Kit (VTK) to provide accelerated Java performance on the SavaJe XE platform. The SavaJe XE operating system is the first, and currently only, operating system to run J2SE applications quickly and efficiently on portable devices, and supports many additional APIs, libraries and packages not supported by PersonalJava or J2ME. SavaJe XE is positioned as an ideal solution for OEMs that want to offer the best Java solution to their customers, and for enterprises and systems integrators looking for a fast, secure and easily implemented mobile Java platform.

"ARM Jazelle technology is establishing itself as a standard for hardware Java acceleration technology. We will use Jazelle technology in conjunction with our platform to further enhance SavaJe XE, a fast, powerful operating system for any Java technology-enabled device, from PDA to set-top box," said George Grey, CEO, SavaJe. "The Java platform is increasingly being adopted by businesses to power e-business, and deploying mobile e-business applications is the next big challenge faced by IT managers. SavaJe XE already runs Java applications between five and fifteen times faster than those running on commercially available Java Virtual Machines for existing operating systems. By combining Jazelle technology with SavaJe XE we will offer our customers the most powerful mobile Java platform in the industry."

This agreement is the first time Jazelle technology has been used for accelerating J2SE applications, and enables devices using the SavaJe XE platform to run high-performance, interactive Java technology applications, such as graphic-intensive games or home shopping or banking, with minimal power consumption. SavaJe XE has been designed to run on devices incorporating ARM cores, including the StrongARM® microprocessor and SavaJe plans to have products available using Jazelle technology in mid-2002.

"SavaJe XE has been designed to run Java applications 'natively', so devices using the combination of Jazelle technology and SavaJe XE offer significant performance advantages to the end users of J2SE, Personal Java and J2ME CDC applications," said Steve Evans, VP, Segment Marketing, ARM. "This agreement with SavaJe brings Jazelle technology to a new range of devices and applications, and shows the advantages in speed, size and power consumption that Jazelle technology can offer to both hardware and software designers."

ARM Jazelle technology enables devices to execute Java bytecodes directly, allowing developers of wireless and Internet-enabled devices to run high-performance Java technology applications up to ten times faster, while incurring minimal power and cost overheads.
