Accelerated Technology's New Nucleus USB Class Drivers Provide Support for Streaming Audio/Video Applications
MOBILE, Ala., July 27, 2005 - Accelerated Technology, a Mentor Graphics division (Nasdaq: MENT), today announced two new class drivers for the Nucleus® USB software, which provides Universal Serial Bus (USB) support for the Nucleus Real-Time Operating System (RTOS). The Nucleus USB Audio class driver and the Nucleus USB Video class driver are designed so that developers can quickly and easily build USB-compliant devices that incorporate streaming audio and/or video functionalities.
Multimedia presents a variety of new problems for developers of embedded devices including streaming large amounts of real-time, higher quality audio and video data over connected devices. Because USB offers a plug-and-play standard interface, higher data transfer rate and greater flexibility in terms of hot swapping, it is rapidly being adopted by embedded device manufacturers to develop today's multimedia devices. The introduction of USB audio and video class specifications, which standardized transport and synchronization mechanisms, allows many audio and video devices to become fully interoperable via USB. As a result, embedded device manufacturers no longer need to tackle the complex and time-consuming task of developing and installing custom device drivers.
The Nucleus USB Audio class driver and the Nucleus USB Video class driver enable developers to create a wide range of complex, multimedia-based devices. By using USB for audio or video streaming , a developer needs to implement only a single Nucleus USB class driver instead of a separate driver for each device. Typical applications in which developers use the Nucleus USB Audio class driver include voice telephony, audio playback and recording. Applications that use the Nucleus USB Video class driver include simple webcams, digital camcorders, digital video cameras and TV tuners.
Availability and Pricing
The Nucleus embedded software is licensed with source code and without royalty fees. Available now, licenses for the Nucleus USB software start at U.S. $14,995 and licenses for the class drivers begin at U.S. $2,995. The new Nucleus USB Audio class driver and the Nucleus USB Video class driver have been released for use with the Nucleus USB host stack, which is USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 compliant, and support the isochronous data transfer type for media streaming. The Nucleus USB Audio class driver and the Nucleus USB Video class driver both adhere to the USB audio and video class specifications.
