Novea RAM is the first member of Virage Logic's new Novea family of electrically alterable non-volatile embedded memory for use in systems-on-a-chip. According to Virage, Novea RAM can retain data unchanged for 10 years. The company also claims the memory can be reprogrammed up to 1,000 times.

For digital and analog designers, Virage provides the ability to place moderate amounts of discrete non-volatile memory on chip. This is useful in digital applications such as key encryption storage in set-top boxes (to encrypt viewing preference information), chip IDs for storing asset tracking information, and product localization to enable cell phones to be reprogrammed to meet multiple wireless protocol standards. Analog applications for which Novea RAM is suited include 802.11 and Bluetooth products requiring storage of communications parameters.

Novea RAM is available now on a 0.18-micron TSMC logic process and is scalable to other geometries.
