Renesas Technology Releases R5H30101 as Industry's First Dedicated Microcontroller for Device and Parts Management Use
Tokyo, June 21, 2005
−− Renesas Technology Corp. today announced the R5H30101 as the industry's first dedicated microcontroller for use in device and parts management enabling implementation of secure management through the provision of an encryption function and a high degree of tamper resistance. Sample shipments will begin in August 2005 in Japan.
The R5H30101 achieves secure protection of data, etc., through the provision of an encryption function and the use of encrypted communication. In addition, the similar kind of anti-tampering*1 functions are included as in a smart card microcontroller, providing a high degree of security. A small 3 mm x 4.06 mm package is used, enabling the R5H30101 to be used in a wide range of application areas, including the consumer and OA product fields. The R5H30101 offers the following features.
(1) | Encryption function implementing highly secure authentication |
The provision of an encryption function using an encryption algorithm and a newly developed proprietary authentication protocol allows easy implementation of highly secure authentication. A variety of encryption IP libraries are also available, enabling the user to select the most suitable encryption IP for a particular application.
(2) | High degree of tamper resistance against illegal attacks |
Provisions against illegal attacks have been strengthened through the use of anti-tampering techniques developed for smart card microcontrollers. This has made it possible to protect management information and similar data requiring confidentiality, and to prevent data leaks.
(3) | Highly reliable on-chip nonvolatile memory |
The R5H30101 is provided with 512 bytes of highly reliable EEPROM (Electrically Erasable and Programmable Read Only Memory) as nonvolatile memory, allowing the user to store important management data such as encryption key data and ID management codes as well as programs. A protect function is also included that prohibits data writing and erasing, enabling inadvertent overwriting or erasure of stored data to be prevented. |
<Product Background>
The current trend in the management of products such as digital still cameras and mobile phones, and the boards and components used in these products, is toward more precise management for purposes of time-of-shipment or post-shipment management.
One user management method is to incorporate management information in a general-purpose microcontroller. However, conventional microcontrollers do not include adequate functions to prevent illegal attacks, and do not provide sufficiently secure data protection for keeping management information data confidential. There is thus a strong market demand for microcontrollers incorporating robust security functions. In response to this market need, Renesas Technology has developed the R5H30101 dedicated microcontroller for device and parts management use, featuring a built-in encryption function and a high degree of tamper resistance.
<Product Details>
The R5H30101 performs encrypted communication using an encryption algorithm and a newly developed proprietary authentication protocol, allowing highly secure authentication to be achieved. The encryption algorithm can provide compatibility with a DES (Data Encryption Standard), MISTY*2, or other encryption IP, allowing the user to select the most suitable encryption IP for a particular application.
Anti-tampering functions such as an abnormality detector used in smart card microcontrollers are also incorporated to improve resistance to illegal attacks from outside, providing a high degree of tamper resistance that makes it possible to prevent leakage of confidential data.
The R5H30101 has 512 bytes of highly reliable EEPROM as on-chip nonvolatile memory, in which the user can store important data requiring confidentiality, such as encryption key data, as well as programs. This EEPROM includes a protect function that enables the security of stored data to be assured. Enabling this function prevents EEPROM from being written to or erased, making it possible for the user to prevent data from being inadvertently overwritten or erased after it has been stored.
The R5H30101 incorporates a 16-bit H8/300H CPU core, with a maximum operating frequency of 10 MHz at a 3.3 V power supply voltage. In addition to the 512-byte EEPROM, 16 Kbytes of mask ROM and 512 bytes of RAM are provided as on-chip memory.
As on-chip peripheral functions, a single-channel synchronous serial communication unit (SSU) enabling high-speed synchronous serial communication is provided as a communication function, and a random number generator is also incorporated that enables random numbers used for encryption key generation to be generated on-chip.
A 3 mm x 4.06 mm 8-pin WSON ( Very-Very thin Small Outline Non-Leaded ) package is used, enabling the R5H30101 to be mounted in a variety of small devices or components.
Renesas Technology will continue to extend its lineup of microcontrollers based on the R5H30101, developing products that meet evolving market needs.
Notes: | 1. | Anti-tampering : Preventing the illegal reading, use, or alteration of data, as well as intentional misoperation |
2. | MISTY : An encryption algorithm developed by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. MISTY is a registered trademark of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. |
