Calxeda Joins OpenStack Community; Leads ARM-based Server Movement for Emerging "Green Clouds"
ARM Server Innovator Continues to Reinforce Its Commitment to Open Standards and Cloud Solutions
Austin, TX, June 22, 2011 – Calxeda, the company changing the data center and server market with high performance, low power semiconductors, today announced it has joined OpenStack, the global collaboration of developers and cloud computing technologists producing the open source cloud computing platform for public and private clouds. Calxeda joins the OpenStack community to help extend cloud offerings to ARM-based server systems, and commits to fully supporting the OpenStack project and ecosystem.

"But this is not just about having our name on the OpenStack member list. Calxeda will be an active member of the OpenStack community, proposing and submitting blueprints and code for the heterogeneous cloud infrastructures we believe must be the future of data centers."
Calxeda will work with the OpenStack community on blueprints and software development, while sharing thought leadership to enable non-traditional architectures in future cloud deployments. And yet the timeline for delivery is real, and aggressive. The company plans to build a reference OpenStack cluster on Calxeda-based servers, with specs and a published whitepaper, before end of 2011, to demonstrate the numerous advantages of “green” clouds.
As workloads transition into the cloud, there is a greater need for both public and private clouds to become more efficient by increasing performance while reducing total energy footprint. Calxeda’s ARM-based servers will offer the perfect amount of performance for certain workloads while consuming as little as 1/10th the energy, and at a dramatically lower TCO. Workloads – like object storage delivery (with OpenStack Object Storage), web-serving, and scale-out analytics – looking to be provisioned via OpenStack will be easy to deploy and maintain and more cost-effective to operate.

The news of Calxeda joining OpenStack falls on the heels of the company’s recent announcement of its Trailblazer Initiative, which also includes a focus on open source cloud computing.
