IP growth strategies
All companies want and need to grow. ARM is no different, and the same is true for ARC, Virage, MIPS, Tensilica, Synopsys, IPextreme, Intel and many others. Obviously, opinions on strategy differ immensely. The recent acquisition offer for ARC by Virage has left me a bit confused (as you may suspect, ARC was widely shopped around) as well as pleased to see another type of MIPS/Chipidea cycle starting. Perhaps Synopsys DesignWare will provide a more sucessful home for Chipidea. At the same time, who will MIPS next align with in physical IP now that Virage is a competitor? I suspect no other than my friends at Dolphin. ARM has been challenged by its acquisition of Artisan (perhaps a more appropriate analogy with Virage+ARC), which I will touch upon in subsequent posts. The path forward in the semiconductor IP space is certainly non-obvious.
