Samsung Electronics Licenses OneNAND to STMicroelectronics
Seoul, South Korea -- October 23, 2006 -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced that STMicroelectronics, one of the worldâs leading semiconductor manufacturers, has licensed Samsungâs most advanced flash memory, OneNANDTM, to help meet rising demand in various applications including the mobile marketplace.
âSamsung welcomes STMicroelectronicsâ decision to support the projected strong continued growth of the worldâs highest performing flash memory,â said Yun-Ho Choi, senior vice president of Samsung Electronicsâ Semiconductor Businessâ Flash Solution Team. âAs a result of STMicroelectronicsâ licensing move, handset and other platform designers can more easily specify OneNAND in an expanding range of mobile applications.â
According to the agreement, STMicroelectronics will support Samsungâs OneNAND starting early 2007.
OneNANDâs advanced architecture features NAND core with SRAM and logic elements to emulate a NOR Flash interface. OneNAND provides a sustained data âreadâ speed of 108 MByte/s, which is four times faster than conventional NAND Flash memory, and a âwriteâ speed of 10 MByte/s, which is more than 46 times faster than multi-level-cell NOR Flash memory. The fast read and write speeds can provide significant performance enhancements in boot-time and application launch-time in mobile handsets and NV-Cache (Non-Volatile Cache) for PC applications.
