ARM Licenses Cortex-M3 Processor To Fujitsu Microelectronics
Fujitsu Microelectronics to utilize ARM Cortex architecture in future low-power applications
September 2, 2009 -- ARM announced today that it has licensed the ARM® Cortex™-M3 processor to Fujitsu Microelectronics Limited for future low-power applications.
ARM has been a partner with Fujitsu Microelectronics since first licensing ARM processor cores in 1998 to the former Electronic Devices Group of Fujitsu Limited, and since then Fujitsu Microelectronics has been adopting ARM architecture for many products. With the licensing of the Cortex-M3 processor from ARM, Fujitsu Microelectronics will be able to provide a wide range of solutions that feature superior performance and low power consumption as well as being able to support the high code density, low memory requirements of 16-bit code.
"Fujitsu Microelectronics’ adoption of the ARM Cortex architecture is a demonstration of support for ARM Cortex-M3 processor-based low-power applications,” said Eric Schorn, VP marketing, Processor Division, ARM. “As a standard, the ARM Cortex architecture enables semiconductor suppliers to maximize their return on investments by reusing investment in tool chains and software."

The ARM Cortex-M3 processor was specifically developed to target the low-cost requirements of a broad range of markets and applications where memory and processor size significantly impact device costs. The Cortex-M3 processor brings together multiple technologies to reduce memory size while delivering industry-leading performance in a small power-efficient RISC core. The Cortex-M3 processor also delivers an ideal platform to accelerate the migration of thousands of applications around the globe from legacy or proprietary components.
