A Quantum Leap Forward by Google
By Pablo Valerio, EETimes (December 12, 2024)

Google’s Quantum AI team has announced an achievement in quantum computing with the Willow chip, signifying a potential paradigm shift in the technological landscape. This processor, unveiled on Monday, exhibits capabilities that surpass traditional supercomputers, promising to revolutionize fields like medicine, AI and energy.
Unprecedented performance
One of Willow’s most remarkable feats is its ability to perform impossible calculations for even the most powerful binary computers to complete within a practical timeframe. A benchmark computation, known as random circuit sampling, was executed by Willow in under five minutes—a task estimated to take a supercomputer 10 septillion years. This vast discrepancy in processing time highlights the exponential computational power of quantum computers compared to their digital counterparts.
