Imagination Technologies licenses high-performance multi-processor graphics processor core to Texas Instruments
May 18, 2010 -- Imagination Technologies Group plc (LSE: IMG; "Imagination"), a leading multimedia and communications chip technologies company, has signed a multi-use license agreement with Texas Instruments Incorporated ("TI") for a multi-processor solution from Imagination's new POWERVR SGX Series5XT Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) IP core family.
TI will deploy the technology in future OMAP™ platform-based SoC designs for Smartphones and other mobile devices. This collaboration will define a new zenith of graphics performance for mobile platforms which operate at extremely low power.
Imagination's POWERVR technology generates advanced graphics and GPU processing capabilities, which exponentially increase the attraction and usability of user interfaces, the speed of browsers, the realism of games, and the impact of navigation applications. Even more, the enhanced capabilities packaged within the OMAP processor will deliver the aforementioned applications across multiple high resolution screens all while dramatically increasing performance.
Hossein Yassaie, CEO, Imagination says: "We are delighted to confirm that we have extended our long-standing relationship with TI. Our core technology continues to be vital to the significant and growing success of TI’s OMAP processors, an industry leading mobile and embedded SoC platform. This agreement will help Imagination deliver its latest outstanding POWERVR graphics technologies into the hands of device manufacturers, developers and consumers for years to come."
Remi El-Ouazzane, Vice President and General Manager, OMAP Platform Business Unit, TI says: "The increasing quantity and sophistication of mobile device applications puts challenging burdens on the industry to enable the superior graphics capabilities with the necessary low power consumption. TI successfully meets those expectations with the integration of Imagination’s POWERVR cores."
About POWERVR Series5XT
Following on from the highly successful POWERVR Series5 SGX cores, members of the POWERVR SGX Series5XT Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) IP core family feature significant performance enhancements over the highly successful Series5 architecture used in earlier members of the SGX family of IP cores. All Series5XT SGX cores are based on a second-generation Universal Scalable Shader Engine (USSE2™) that delivers significantly higher processing throughput of the earlier Series5 USSE shader engine, as well as other architectural extensions enabling low-power and high-performance for 2D, 3D and general purpose (GP-GPU) processing in either single core or scalable multi-processor (MP) solutions.
