WiGig Wireless Display Codec

Overview

Jointwave WDE 960 is a set of WDE / WiGig H.264 Codec IP Core, including WDE Encoder and WDE Decoder. Jointwave has licensed WDE/WiGig H.264 Codec IP to Japanese customers and silicon validation, it's already in massive production.

The Wireless Gigabit Alliance (a.k.a. WiGig) is an organization promoting the adoption of multi-gigabit speed wireless communications technology operating over the unlicensed 60 GHz frequency band.
The WiGig specification will enable high performance wireless data, display and audio applications that supplement the capabilities of today’s wireless LAN devices.
In particular, it provides the “WiGig Display Extension” (WDE) protocol adaptation layer that:
supports wireless transmission of audio/visual data,
enables wireless DisplayPort and other display interfaces that include the High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection 2.1 feature,
offers key A/V applications, such as the transmission of visually lossless compressed video from a computer or digital camera to an HDTV monitor or projector.

Key Features

  • WDE / WiGig H.264 Codec IP
  • WiGig H.264 codec IP is designed to be integrated into a WiGig device, providing:
  • * high-performance high-quality H.264 video compression,
  • High 4:4:4 Intra Profile, support 8/10/12 bits
  • * Ultra-low latency, mirror to mirror less than 2ms
  • * In compliance with the WDE specification,
  • * Max 350Mbps in 1080p@60fps HD mode
  • * Max 1200Mbps in 2160p@60fps 4K mode
  • * Including Encoder and Decoder

Benefits

  • Encoder size is only 300K logic gates, no need external memory
  • Decoder size is only 250K logic gates, could be configured to with/without external memory
  • Ultra-low latency, mirror to mirror less than 2ms
  • Real time 1080p@60fps 4:4:4 WDE Codec Demo On Altera Stratix3 FPGA boards, one board for encoder and another for decoder
