MIPS Technologies Licenses Next-Generation 32-Bit Core to Texas Instruments for Use in Broadband Solutions
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 18, 2001-- MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:MIPS - news; Nasdaq:MIPSB - news), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer and network applications, announced that Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE:TXN - news) has taken a license for its next-generation 32-bit core, the MIPS32(TM) 4KEc(TM) synthesizable core. TI is using the 4KEc core, which, at 1.4 Dhrystone MIPS/MHz, offers the highest performance available in a 32-bit synthesizable core, for broadband solutions which TI will integrate with its digital signal processing (DSP) technology.
TI has been a MIPS Technologies customer since 1999, when it became the first company to take a license for MIPS 32- and 64-bit cores. It used the MIPS32 4Kc(TM) core in several products for DSL and cable broadband applications, and in multiple ASIC designs. Now, TI will use the new 4KEc core as part of its integrated silicon and software data and voice chipset solutions for asymmetrical DSL (ADSL), cable and voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) broadband products. The end result will be home routers, integrated access devices and voice-over broadband gateways that allow consumers to network multiple Internet accounts and access entertainment and business services such as streaming audio/visual, real-time video conferencing and virtual private network security.
