Wind River Workbench 3.0, On-Chip Debugging Delivers New Enhancements and Greater Processor Support With Leading Linux Debugging to Shorten Design Cycles and Get Mobile Products to Market Faster

ALAMEDA, Calif .--December 12, 2007

--Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:WIND - News), the global leader in Device Software Optimization (DSO), today announced the upcoming availability of Wind River Workbench® 3.0, On-Chip Debugging, the company’s comprehensive JTAG embedded device development toolset for mitigating the complexities of on-chip debugging. Wind River Workbench, On-Chip Debugging includes support for key new processors in the mobile device market and introduces new enhancements designed to make device hardware and software development and debug simpler and more intuitive. Mobile device manufacturers can now leverage these new enhancements and existing Linux debugging capabilities to shorten design cycles and make effective use of their time to differentiate at the application layer.

“To fully realize and harness the power of processors for the mobile market requires a solid development foundation,“ said Sandy Orlando, Vice President and General Manager of Wind River On-Chip Debugging. “Wind River Workbench, On-Chip Debugging enables that by simplifying hardware and software development, providing a rich set of tools that are integrated into an open Eclipse environment. This latest release reinforces our leadership position in on-chip debugging and our commitment to providing developers the best solution for cross-target system level development tools by extending greater debugging solutions for the mobile device market.”

“ARM designs processing systems to meet and exceed the low power, high performance requirements of mobile consumer devices,” said Tim Holden, director of OS relations, ARM. “Wind River’s support for the ARM Architecture including ARM® multi-core solutions extends the choice of software development environments available to creators of advanced handheld products.”

"Freescale is a leader in the effort to provide advanced low power devices for the wireless and mobile market segments," said Aaron Shagrin, director of business development, Freescale Semiconductor. "Our customers expect a comprehensive development and on-chip debug environment with which they can deploy our i.MX family of applications processors. Our partnership with Wind River and our close cooperation in developing the feature set for Wind River On-Chip Debugging enables our mutual customers get to market faster and easier."

Wind River Workbench 3.0, On-Chip Debugging Enhancements:

In the growing mobile and handheld device market there is increasing pressure to get new products to market faster and at lower cost. Mobile developers need a solution that simplifies hardware bring-up and to debug the complex interactions between hardware and software with a single open solution. Key new enhancements in Wind River Workbench 3.0, On-Chip Debugging improves the ability for device manufacturers to debug and develop mobile device designs, effectively shortening design cycles allowing for faster time-to-market. These include:

  • Support for key mobile device processors: These include the ARM Cortex™-A8 processor with NEON™ instruction set, Freescale i.MX 27, Marvell PXA 300/310/320 application processors, and Texas Instruments TMS320DM644x DaVinci family.
  • Debugging with Wind River Linux Real-Time Core: Allowing users to debug all aspects of device software when running Wind River Linux, which is quickly being adopted by the mobile device industry. This includes the ability to debug the kernel, user mode applications and the ability to debug real-time applications that are using Wind River Linux Real-Time Core.
  • Open environment capabilities: Customers developing ARM processor-based systems can now use Wind River Workbench, On-Chip Debugging with additional industry leading compilers. The benefits of Workbench’s integrated edit-compile-debug capabilities are achieved allowing customers to tailor tool chains to best meet specific needs and to optimize the workflow.
  • Integrated Development Environment (IDE) Support: Workbench is the leading on-chip debugging development environment fully integrated with Eclipse, and continues to enhance the IDE by adding views and capabilities to Workbench's Eclipse-based environment.
Addressing Development Challenges for Mobile and Handheld Devices

As most mobile devices contain multiple processing cores, maintaining a complete context of the entire system under development can be challenging for most on-chip debugging solutions. Wind River’s technology-leading JTAG Server and JTAG Accelerator technologies provide high-speed JTAG debugging for multicore processors. Wind River’s JTAG Accelerator technology allows for full JTAG bandwidth utilization while supporting today’s complex 32- and 64-bit processors. Wind River’s JTAG Server technology enables developers to connect to over 128 processors at the same time and actively debug multiple processors at once and within a single instance of an IDE.

Minimizing power consumption is an absolute requirement for today’s mobile and handheld devices. Wind River’s support for architectures focused on low power will enable customers to use this solution for devices targeted for the mobile and handheld market. Additionally, as the adoption of Linux continues to increase in consumer and mobile devices, Workbench, On-Chip Debugging support for kernel- and user-mode debug for kernel.org and Wind River Linux further enhances the offering to the consumer and mobile markets.
