Galaxy Power and ARM Develop Intelligent Power Management Software for ARM Powered® Consumer Electronics
VALLEY FORGE, Pennsylvania and CAMBRIDGE, UK - February 21, 2000 - Galaxy Power, Inc. (Galaxy) and ARM [(LSE:ARM); (Nasdaq:ARMHY)] today announced they have co-developed an efficient software-only implementation of Galaxy's QuickSaver® Intelligent Power Management technology for operation with ARM® core-based processors. This technology collaboration will enable systems designers to easily and cost-effectively design-in Galaxy Power's QuickSaver Intelligent Charge Solution for battery-powered wireless and mobile products utilizing an ARM processor core.
"The proliferation of increasingly sophisticated portable devices such as digital cellular phones, PDA's, MP3 players and digital cameras, has highlighted the key role of battery technology," said Dave Walsh, business manager, Software Systems, ARM. "The availability of an ARM core-optimized implementation of Galaxy Power's QuickSaver software will enable significant improvements for the performance, time-to-market and development costs of next-generation battery-powered consumer electronics."
"With the software-only adaptive Intelligent Power Management solution, wireless and portable products powered by the ARM core can now rely on an extended, efficient and consistent supply of power from rechargeable batteries. These advancements will allow OEM's to offer cost-reduced and performance-enhanced products for the world markets," said Steve Halla, general manager, Sales and Marketing, Galaxy Power, Inc.
The QuickSaver solution manages the charging of a battery and eliminates any capacity fade or Equivalent Series Resistance which degrades the performance of batteries which are charged using traditional management techniques. ARM software engineers have performed specific code optimizations which have allowed Galaxy Power efficiently to implement their technology in only 4.8k bytes of ROM, 140 bytes of RAM and uses only 0.004% of an ARM Powered processor's available CPU cycles in a typical digital cellular phone design. The ARM core-optimized QuickSaver software is available now, for all implementations of the ARM 32-bit RISC architecture. Pricing will depend upon the application.
