Sequans adopts Imagination's MIPS Aptiv CPUs for next-generation LTE products

Multi-threaded MIPS interAptiv cores to enable high efficiency single-mode solutions

London, UK – 19 December, 2013 – Imagination Technologies (IMG.L) announces that Sequans Communications S.A. (NYSE: SQNS) is leveraging its MIPS Aptiv CPUs in the creation of next-generation low-power, cost-effective single-mode LTE solutions targeting a broad range of markets including tablets, M2M, Internet of Things (IoT), wearables and other consumer products.

Sequans’ MIPS-based 4G products are already shipping to OEMs globally, and its MIPS-based EZLinkLTE™ VZ20Q, VZ20M and VZ21M LTE Release 9 Category 4 modules are certified by Verizon. Now, thanks to using Imagination’s MIPS interAptiv cores with hardware multi-threading, Sequans will deliver a new generation of highly-efficient single-mode LTE solutions.

Imagination’s MIPS interAptiv CPUs provide leading performance efficiency in their class. Hardware multi-threading technology within the interAptiv cores enables better overall throughput, quality of service (QoS), and power/performance efficiency for a wide range of applications. Imagination has demonstrated that multi-threaded MIPS CPUs can achieve as much as 45% performance improvements compared to single-threaded platforms for LTE and LTE Advanced baseband processing.

Says Tony King-Smith, EVP marketing, Imagination: “We are delighted to extend our relationship with Sequans to enable their new generation of high performance, cost-effective LTE solutions. Our multi-threaded MIPS cores such as interAptiv are a perfect example of our leadership in power and architectural efficiency – features across all our IP families. We look forward to working closely with Sequans to help them to leverage the power of our MIPS CPU IP cores to achieve further success in emerging high-growth single-mode LTE markets such as IoT.”

Says Craig Miller, VP marketing, Sequans: “With our single-mode LTE chips and modules, Sequans makes it easy and affordable for our customers to enable 4G connectivity in all types of products. The power and cost efficiencies embodied in Imagination’s multi-threaded MIPS CPUs help us to create high-performance LTE solutions that deliver high throughput, low power consumption and high reliability in a small form factor at a competitive price.”

About MIPS processors
Imagination’s family of MIPS CPU IP cores are ideal for products where ultra-low power, compact silicon area and high levels of integration are required. The comprehensive portfolio of MIPS processor IP cores range from the smallest 32-bit microcontrollers to high-performance 32-bit and 64-bit multi-core solutions. Based on a heritage of continuous innovations built over more than three decades, including full support for 64-bit for more than 20 years, Imagination’s MIPS architecture is the industry’s most mature and efficient RISC architecture, delivering the highest performance and lowest power consumption in a given silicon area. Thanks to the clean architecture, small silicon area and advanced power and thermal efficiency of the MIPS architecture, SoC designers have the ideal CPU solution for any application from the highest performance network servers, to the most power-efficient mobile applications processors, down to the smallest deeply embedded microcontrollers for IoT.
