Overview
IEEE 802.11i is a Wireless Local Area Network standard in the IEEE 802.11 set of specifications. It is also labelled as WPA ™ (Wireless Protected Access) and WPA2 ™ by the Wi Fi Alliance . IEEE 802.11 i is designed to overcome the weaknesses of WEP (Wireless Equivalent Privacy), the original security system for IEEE 802.11 netwo rks It upgrades the WEP algorithm s through TKIP Temporal Key Integrity Protocol ) which uses per packet keys and a better MIC (M essage I ntegrity C ode It also introduces a new encryption algorithm based on AES 128 ( Advanced Encryption Standard ) in CCMP CTR with CBC MAC Protocol ) mode , and a new authentication procedure based on the IEEE 802.1X standard, making it possible to authenticate users using a common password (WPA Personal) or a third party server (WPA Enterprise).
