4G Chipset Provider Sequans Communications Licenses MIPS Technologies' Processor Core
MIPS32® M14Kc⢠Core to Provide High Performance, Cost-Efficiency and Low Power for Mobile Solutions
SUNNYVALE, Calif. - October 21, 2010- MIPS Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer, home networking, wireless, communications and business applications, announced today that 4G chipmaker Sequans Communications has selected its MIPS32® M14Kc synthesizable processor core for next-generation mobile solutions. The M14K family of cores is the first to leverage the microMIPS Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) which maintains 98% of the high performance of the MIPS32 architecture while reducing code size by at least 30%, translating to significant silicon cost savings.
Sequans customers are leading equipment manufacturers and mobile operators that are building its technology into mobile WiMAX and LTE networks around the globe. "We chose MIPS Technologies' M14Kc core because of its clear value proposition and alignment with our own goal of enabling mass-market 4G with solutions that are low-cost, high-performance and low-power," said Dr. Georges Karam, president and CEO, Sequans. "MIPS Technologies shows a commitment to supporting our business needs, and we look forward to a long and successful relationship with the company."
"We are pleased to work closely with Sequans to support its success in LTE," said Sandeep Vij, president and CEO, MIPS Technologies. "MIPS Technologies has a strong and growing presence in mobile infrastructure, and now has multiple inroads to the mobile handset including 4G baseband processing. The MIPS architecture, with its high performance, low power consumption and small silicon footprint, is a great fit for these demanding applications. And our new M14K cores are experiencing the most rapid rate of adoption of any cores in the history of MIPS."
About the MIPS32 M14K Core Family
The MIPS32 M14K core family-including the M14K core and the M14Kc core with integrated cache controller-provides high levels of system performance and power efficiency for extremely cost-sensitive embedded applications such as 32-bit microcontrollers (MCUs), home entertainment, personal entertainment and home networking. The M14K and M14Kc cores are the first MIPS32-compatible cores that also execute the new microMIPS instruction set architecture (ISA), achieving high performance of 1.5 DMIPS/MHz with an advanced level of code compression, translating to significant silicon cost savings. With smaller code size and efficient use of the instruction cache to lower the cost, the microMIPS ISA also helps to reduce system power consumption.
