Xilinx Ships 40 Millionth Spartan Device - World's Lowest Cost FPGA
Four generations of Spartan Series FPGAs have proven a cost-effective alternative to ASICs for high-volume applications
SAN JOSE, Calif., September 23, 2002-Xilinx Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX), the world's leading programmable logic solutions company with more than 60 percent FPGA market segment share, today announced it has delivered over 40 million Spartan Series devices into the hands of customers. Starting as low as $2.55 per device, the Spartan Series is the lowest-cost family of FPGAs shipping today. A cornerstone of the company's market diversification strategy, Spartan represents over 13 percent of Xilinx revenue.
Today, Spartan Series products have been broadly adopted in high-volume, high-growth applications historically dominated by application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) (e.g., broadband access, home networking, digital video displays, DVD recorder/players, set top boxes, automotive). Xilinx customers worldwide are taking full advantage of the combination of price, performance, densities, and flexibility of the Spartan Series.
"We chose Xilinx Spartan Series FPGAs for our products because they met the time-to-market and low-cost requirements we needed and provided us with the flexibility to make last minute changes. Our competition didn't make it to market, and we did," said Tom McLoughlin, president and CEO of Harmon-Kardon.
Since introducing Spartan more than four years ago, Xilinx has delivered four generations of these devices, offering customers a low cost, programmable alternative to ASICs without NRE costs. In 2003, the company is on track to deliver a fifth generation of the Spartan Series, reaching even higher densities at significantly lower price points.
"Xilinx has brought FPGA technology 'to the masses' through a low-cost, diversification strategy over the past several years," said Rich Sevcik, senior vice president of FPGA solutions at Xilinx. "Bottom line? There's no competing product available today that has any chance of taking the market 'by storm' anytime soon. Any new market entrant will be two years behind, at a minimum, given Xilinx's extensive lead."
With $1.02B in revenues in FY2002, Xilinx is the fifth largest ASIC/PLD company worldwide, according to Dataquest. The company offers customers the industry's broadest product offering, ranging from sophisticated Virtex-II Series platform FPGAs for programmable systems, with more than 8-million gates, and low-cost, high-performance Spartan Series FPGAs, to high performance, low-power CPLDs targeted at consumer markets.
Pricing and Availability
The Spartan series ranges in density from 5,000 to 300,000 system gates. Spartan pricing ranges from $2.55 for the XCSO5XL-VQ100 (5,000 system gates) to $17.95 for the XC2S300E-PQ208 (300,000 system gates) in volumes greater than 250,000 units. Spartan devices are available now in full volume production from distributors worldwide or direct from Xilinx at www.xilinx.com/spartan. With all family members shipping today using 300mm wafer technology, the Spartan-IIE family is delivering the lowest system cost solution in the industry today, and is the only true ASIC alterative FPGA solution available.
