Mentor Graphics Achieves Industry-First OpenMAX Conformance for Nucleus OS Multimedia Framework
– Mentor Graphics Corporation (Nasdaq: MENT) today announced that the Nucleus® Operating System (OS) Multimedia Framework (MMF) has passed OpenMAX™ IL conformance testing on the Atmel AT91SAM9261 platform, making it the first commercial OS to achieve such platform conformance validation awarded by the Khronos™ Group. Reaching this industry milestone promotes easier porting of multimedia components to the Nucleus OS, speeding up design and delivery of multimedia applications.
“We are honored to become the first ever recipients of Khronos Group’s OpenMAX conformance validation,” said Neil Henderson, general manager for the Embedded Systems Division of Mentor Graphics. “For Nucleus customers, this industry-validated multimedia API solves portability issues and dramatically improves interoperability when working with multimedia components from different sources.”
The Nucleus OS incorporates a powerful user interface engine that enables the creation and customization of visually compelling, easy to use interfaces for consumer electronic devices such as mobile phones, personal media players and set-top boxes. Completely new designs can be realized without modification to the device’s software stack.
The Nucleus Multimedia Framework extends this capability, enabling rich audio and video content to be incorporated easily throughout a device’s user interface. Having certified OpenMAX IL interfaces further improves interoperability when porting and optimizing new multimedia components on this platform.
“This announcement marks the beginning of an era, where certified OpenMAX-based platforms enable the rapid and flexible deployment of streaming media acceleration on a wide range of silicon platforms and operating systems,” commented Neil Trevett, president of the Khronos Group. “The certified Nucleus OS MMF implementation offers developers a trusted and industry-certified environment, where they can take advantage of the full power of OpenMAX capabilities.”
