Accelerated Technology Announces Nucleus RTOS Support For the Renesas SH4AL-DSP Benefits High-End Mobile Phone Developers
- Accelerated Technology®, a Mentor Graphics division (Nasdaq: MENT), today announced that they have partnered with Renesas Technology Corp. to provide developers building high-end mobile phones with a royalty-free, full-featured software solution beginning with the Nucleus® Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) and development tools for Renesas' products based on the SH4AL digital signal processor (DSP) core beginning with the SH-Mobile3.
Mobile phones are expanding their portfolio to include advanced and diversified multimedia applications such as game and moving image distribution and video phones, and more complex and varied applications can be expected to appear as communication speeds continue to increase. The SH4AL-DSP serves as the core of the SH-Mobile3, which was created by Renesas to meet the need for higher performance and functionality in high-end mobile phone models. Developers using the SH-Mobile3 with the Nucleus RTOS and development tools will benefit from the performance improvement as well as enhanced features such as 3-megapixel class camera module support, moving image processing by 2D/3D graphics engine and an MPEG-4 hardware accelerator.
The Nucleus RTOS provides a scalable and robust platform that meets the high processing needs of all types of today's embedded systems, and has been widely used in mobile applications. In addition to the Nucleus PLUS kernel, developers implementing the micro-ITRON standard can utilize the Nucleus microiPLUS kernel. To round out the offering, other products that support the SH4AL-DSP include the code|lab® embedded development environment and the code|lab debugger.
"The SH-Mobile3 is a highly integrated, powerful media processor tailored to meet the performance requirements of advanced mobile phones in order to execute complex multimedia applications such as audio, video streaming and graphic-heavy programs," said Brian Davis, director, business development, advanced solutions group, Renesas Technology America, Inc. "The Nucleus RTOS helps maximize the performance of the SH-Mobile3 device by providing easy-to-use, optimized software support. Accelerated Technology is also one of the key members of the SH-Mobile Consortium partners program."
"Even as mobile phones become smaller, the number of complex features increases. The Nucleus RTOS meets the needs of mobile phone developers building these compact, feature-rich handsets by providing an RTOS that is scalable and robust, but with a small memory footprint. This allows developers using SuperH processors to choose which capabilities they want for their particular phone design," said Robert Day, director of marketing, Embedded Systems Division, Mentor Graphics.
Pricing and Availability
The Nucleus embedded software is sold in source code format and without royalty fees. The Nucleus development tools are sold in binary format and are available with either node-locked or floating licensing schemes. Licenses for the Nucleus software begin at U.S. $12,495 per seat and licenses for the code|lab tools begin at $2,495 per seat.
