MILPITAS, Calif. -- LSI Logic Corp. has released a new single-chip CDMA processor which integrates both mixed-signal and baseband functions. The IS-95 baseband processor (CBP3.0) is targeted for use in IS 95B-compliant wireless devices such as handsets for the cellular and PCS bands. The combination of mixed-signal and baseband functions will enable handset manufacturers to shrink their products even further, according to the company. Housed in a 280-pin count CSP package, the new processor integrates an ARM7TDMI microprocessor, two OAKDSPCore DSPs, mixed-signal circuitry and standard cell logic to include all baseband processing logic in a single chip. The CBP 3.0 features an integrated real-time clock and an RX filter that eliminates the need for external baseband functions and the need for an external real-time clock. It offers standby time of over 300 hours and talk time of over two hours. Earlier this year, LSI Logic forged an allia nce with RTX Telecom A/S, based in Denmark, to provide turnkey design services for wireless communications systems based on the CBP 3.0 devices being launched today. At that time, Greg Helton, director of marketing for the Wireless Products Division at LSI Logic, said that the alliance would enable customers to reduce the design cycle for handsets, which typically take a year from concept to production.
