Adopters Spotlight AV1’s Transformative Benefits in AOMedia Showcase

Meta, Microsoft, Netflix, and NETINT share firsthand accounts of how AV1 enhances business operations and customer experiences.

Wakefield, Mass. — March 12, 2025The Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) has expanded its AOMedia Adoption Showcase, spotlighting success stories from four adopters: Meta, Microsoft, Netflix, and NETINT. These stories provide an exclusive look at the advantages of AV1 from the unique perspective of each adopter, including enhanced video quality, operational efficiencies, and improved user experiences.

This expansion builds on the initiative’s original lineup of adopters — ATEME, Bitmovin, Google, VideoLAN, Vimeo and Visionular — further solidifying AV1’s influence across the media and technology sectors.

“The AOMedia Adoption Showcase illustrates the advantages that AV1 brings across a range of video coding applications,” said Dr. Pierre-Anthony Lemieux, Executive Director of AOMedia. “From driving operational efficiencies to enhancing video quality, the insights shared by Meta, Microsoft, Netflix, NETINT, and others highlight that AV1 is satisfying unmet needs.”

Adopter User Stories Highlighted in the Adoption Showcase

The showcased adopter stories demonstrate how AV1 has enabled industry leaders to deliver compelling media experiences while achieving lower bitrates.

  • Meta: Leveraging AV1 to improve video quality across its family of apps, ensuring smoother playback and reduced bandwidth consumption for users worldwide.
  • Microsoft: Driving innovation in video conferencing by utilizing AV1 to enhance video quality and reduce latency in Microsoft Teams.
  • Netflix: Delivering exceptional streaming experiences with AV1, allowing users to enjoy higher-quality video at lower bitrates, even in bandwidth-constrained environments.
  • NETINT: Empowering streaming platforms and services with AV1 by providing ultra-efficient, scalable, and high-performance VPU-based encoding for the data center.

AV1 video is becoming a cornerstone of modern digital experiences, offering significant reductions in streaming and storage costs. Apple’s inclusion of a dedicated AV1 decoder in its latest media engine—featured in the iPhone 15 Pro models with the A17 Pro chip and M3-powered Macs—highlights its growing relevance. Today, approximately 95% of Netflix’s catalog is encoded in AV1, over 50% of YouTube’s catalog (by watch time) is available in AV1, and over 70% of Meta Reels on iOS (by watch time) utilize the codec. With tens of millions of AV1-enabled Intel CPUs and GPUs in circulation, AV1 is solidifying its role in delivering high-quality, efficient video experiences across platforms.
