Overview

‘Pulsar-AV1’ is a fully hardwired AV1 video encoder IP that offers high computational and compression efficiency beyond customer-grade.

As the amount of video data in internet traffic grows, storage and network costs for streaming services are increasing. Optimizing video encoding is critical for cost-effective streaming services. Video encoding is a technique for reducing the size or bitrate of a video without negatively impacting its human-perceived quality.

Optimizing encoding involves moving to newer, more compression-efficient codecs. Since AV1, the next-generation codec standard with high compression efficiency, emerged as an alternative to the legacy H.264, AV1 adoption has been growing every year. However, software-based AV1 encoders have high computational overhead, making it difficult to achieve a meaningful break-even point and cost savings for the services gained by replacing existing codecs.

The vendor has leveraged semiconductor design techniques such as High-Level Synthesis to implement AV1 hardware IP, offering high computational and compression efficiency beyond customer-grade.

Better compression efficiency over av1 encoder in GPU and ASIC chips

Pulsar-AV1 outperforms compression efficiency over AV1 encoders from major GPU graphic and ASIC accelerator cards available in the market.

BLUEDOT focuses on developing video-specific AI model and advanced video codec hardware IPs for such semiconductor devices as FPGA, ASIC, and SOC. The technologies of IPs meet recent requirements of visual media data center services that include video streaming, transcoding, and cloud gaming. BLUEDOT has a capability of constructing and training in-house AI models for video processing such as de-noise, quality enhancing, upscaling, and encoder-aware quality optimizing. With long experienced and expert team, BLUEDOT develops advanced video/image encoder algorithm such as AV1 and AVIF to offer a better compression efficiency and visual quality compared to widely used such as H.264 and JPEG. Hardware IP implementation requires a level of expertise and is known for long development cycle. But, as BLUEDOT is an expert in HLS design methodology, implementation cycle is shorter than conventional method, enabling us to response to market demand quickly and update product flexibly per customer’s request. BLUEDOT offers a diverse portfolio of AI-powered video processor and codec IP. AI-powered video processor IP improves the user’s viewing experience by enhancing low-quality content or regenerating it for high-resolution displays. In addition, advanced video encoder and AI-based quality optimization IPs help reduce video storage and delivery costs for online streaming services, which are increasingly driven by rapidly growing demand for high-definition content and essential support for a wide range of playback devices.
