What Is a CODEC IP Core?
The term CODEC is a blend of the words coder and decoder, describing a system capable of both encoding and decoding signals.
Audio CODEC IP Core
One of the most common uses of a CODEC IP core is in audio processing applications. An audio CODEC IP core converts the continuous analog audio signals—captured by a microphone—into digital form, represented by a stream of binary data. This digital format can be easily stored, transmitted, and processed by digital systems such as smartphones, sound cards, or embedded audio processors.
When playback is needed, the same CODEC performs the reverse operation: it decodes the stored digital audio stream back into an analog signal that can be sent to speakers or headphones. High-performance audio CODEC IP cores are designed to maintain sound quality, reduce latency, and ensure accurate signal reproduction across a wide frequency range.

Video CODEC IP Core
Another major application is in video systems, where video CODEC IP cores handle the encoding and decoding of video streams. A video CODEC converts analog video signals into compressed digital data for storage or real-time transmission, such as in streaming platforms, video conferencing, and digital cameras.
During playback, the decoder reconstructs the original visual data from the compressed digital stream and converts it back to analog format for display. Modern video CODEC IP cores often support industry standards such as H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and VP9, enabling high-resolution video with optimized compression efficiency.

- Streaming and broadcast equipment
