Tower Semiconductor Rides AI Surge with Silicon Photonics and Silicon Germanium Tower Semiconductor is leveraging the AI boom, with plans to double its silicon photonics revenue to $100M this year and potentially double it again in 2024, according to President Marco Racanelli. The Israeli chip foundry, ranked 7th globally, is using advanced silicon photonics and silicon germanium technologies to enable faster, more energy-efficient data transfers. The company boasts over 50 silicon photonics customers, including seven of the top 11 datacom transceiver makers, and holds a market-leading >50% share in transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs) and drivers. Analysts suggest these technologies are crucial for AI-driven optical interconnects, especially as data centers transition to co-packaged optics. To expand capacity, Tower has partnered with Intel Corporation and STMicroelectronics, securing cost-effective fab access for its power management ICs and other products. This strategic move aligns with increasing Western demand amid geopolitical shifts away from Taiwan and China. With silicon photonics projected to account for 10% of Tower’s revenue within two years, the company is well-positioned in the AI-driven semiconductor market. What happened in Las Vegas stays in Vegas… no way! This is the second day at the CES and what happened yesterday gives me a lot of energy that I like to share! NEWRACOM is working on the next chip to make 802.11ah, HaLow beter, lower power. Halow is the normal wifi protocol but than low power and low range perfectly suitable for IoT applications. Ambiq announced their solution for hearing aids, the Apollo510 with the neuralSPOT deep learning solution is the next step in hearing improvements Also I met many startup at the Dutch area: The company Moos that make smart AI retail inventory systems, to a grocery store knows a shelf is empty. The guys from Tulip Tech developed the highest density battery that ables drones to fly double the distance. FlowBeans is probably the smartest i have seen, injecting medicine without a needle but with a laser been… i see a good future for diabetic and other people with chronical illnesses. Quantum computing reserarch is important and we should continue to invest in it. Just we need to stop treating it as the only pathway to scaling compute and stop earmarking R&D funding for it. It is basic science research, has some interesting cybersecurity applications, but the rest of the field of unconventional computing has much more promising architectures. And certainly public markets are not an appropriate avenue for these companies.
